My Leadership Definition and Values
I personally define leadership as the ability to lead, listen to their team, be respectful to their team, and be confident in their actions. A leader must also address and resolve conflicts and understand and appreciate cultural differences. Effective leaders must foster inclusive environments where problems are addressed openly and respectfully. A leader needs to do this to be an effective leader and a great person.
The core values that influence my leadership calling are communication, integrity, and empathy. Communication allows me to let the team know what I say and mean. Without effective communication, the team will fall apart. Integrity is an important value that every leader should have. This value allows me to be honest and transparent with my fellow team members. Empathy is crucial for understanding different perspectives about your team. This lets me understand and appreciate the different ideas that team members bring.

Communication
Why did you choose this competency?
I chose this competency because communication is key for a great leader. Since my level of communication is beginner, I need to improve it.
How will you work on developing this competency?
I can attend a communication skills workshop by the ILC. I can also talk more in the RSO I joined, ISS, and contribute more to the RSO.
What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency?
I hope to communicate more efficiently with others and be more confident in my communication skills.



Relationship Management
Why did you choose this competency?
I chose this competency because I am a beginner in it, and I need to learn how to keep long-term relationships.
How will you work on developing this competency?
I will attend the conflict management workshop by the ILC. I will also ask for advice from professors, leaders, etc.
What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency?
I hope to be a more effective relationship builder and keeper. I also hope to understand how to best deal with conflict in a group relationship
Empathy
Why did you choose this competency?
I chose this competency because I believe empathy is an important skill that, if mastered, will improve the effectiveness of a leader to understand different perspectives.
How will you work on developing this competency?
I will work on improving this competency by watching Brene Browns TED Ed talk and reading Ernest Wilson's article.
What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency?
I hope to be able to understand different perspectives better and to understand where my team members come from.


Cultural Competency
Why did you choose this competency?
I chose this because I think it is important to understand where people come from and how this might affect their decisions.
How will you work on developing this competency?
I will improve this by going to the ILC Navigating Multicultural Organizations workshop. I will also watch Kenyona Mathews TED Ed talk on Inclusion Over Diversity.
What practical skills or knowledge do you hope to gain by further developing this competency?
I hope to learn how to better understand different cultures to better include people from diverse cultures.
